I've always thought Shaq and Kobe were both pretty petty. They want to 1 up the other in every interview I've seen with them together.
I remember an interview with them in the last 6 months, where Kobe openly admitted he got satisfaction by having 1 more ring than Shaq.

I think they are both starting to realize that their combined egos fucked up a solid chance to have won atleast 3-4 additional championships- and obviously if Shaq could have bothered to be in shape, that would have helped in their championship quests.

I disagree. I don’t think Kobe’s opinions changed since 2010. I think Kobe realized at the time they were playing together how filthy Shaq was, but also realized Shaq didn’t care as much as him. He absolutely knew how good they could be together, but he also hated Shaq for not caring and he hated the fans for blaming Kobe for losing in 04 when it was Shaq who wasn’t trying. I think after that it was all about proving to himself that he was as good as Shaq, and that meant winning more rings.
I also don’t think Kobe would change the way it happened for Shaq to stay and create a dynasty, even if they won way more. The way it happened, it created both a goal to chase for Kobe and a better individual career storyline than just winning with Shaq.
Shaq, on the other hand, I think everytime he sees a Kobe clip he hasn’t seen on his recommended YouTube he realizes what the guy was all about and what they could have been if he had been willing to listen to a guy that was younger and, at the time, less accomplished than him. I think he started realizing that in 2010 and then again when Kobe retired.

Idk man, Shaq averaged 27/11 in the ‘04 finals, including 34/11 in the miserable game 1 loss when he unfortunately turned over the ball too much and Kobe shot 37%. Not to mention the game 4 loss when he went 36/20 with Kobe scoring 20pts on 32% from the floor.
Watching that series, Shaq played his game for the most part. Kobe averaged like 35% from the floor in those 4 losses on his typical high volumes. I don’t think you can go pointing fingers on that ‘04 series on Shaq’s effort when he did enough to win multiple games without the typical contribution he had in wins from Kobe.

I never thought I'd be the one defending Kobe, but sometimes I think the average r/NBA user is too new of a basketball fan to know what it was like watching Kobe. I hated the guy as a fan, but you would not have been laughed out of the room for bringing him up as one of the greatest of all time before advanced metrics became such darlings.
I'm not saying he's better than MJ or Lebron, but I do think he's vastly underrated sometimes now.

Me personally I don't think Kobe was better than MJ. But it's comical how this sub underrates Kobe as far as to say that he isn't even top 10 all time compared to how nba players talk about him.

I think I speak for most Spurs fans when I say the day Kobe retired was one of the happiest days of my life. The dude was a monster and I have never feared one individual man before or since then as much as him.
