They do at the once the trade deadline passes and there’s no offers for him. Buying him out means they don’t have to pay him the remainder of his contract that would remain if nothing happens.
Iggy’s not even playing for the team anyways so there wouldn’t be any reason to not buy him out post-trade deadline.

All while they were tanking.

No rebuilding assets there, Memphis says they want a first, which the Clips could do with their 2020 pick. I just don't know if Iggy is worth Moe (who is playing well) & a first, especially since Iggy won't play many minutes during the regular season, while Moe can, which will be helpful for Kawhi's load management. I suspect if clippers do this, they will wait until the deadline.

It's worth it for the Lakers imo, it gives them another body to throw at PG/Kawhi. You run out a front court of Bron, Iggy and AD with Green and Bradley at the guards and you got a hell of a defensive unit, in both ability and IQ. I'd actually feel more comfortable picking the Lakers over the Clippers if they signed Iguodala. He's a proven commodity in the playoffs.
Edit: Guys I get it it, the Lakers can't match salary. I still think the basketball fit is better and more pivotal for the Lakers than it is for the Clippers, but I understand the move is unlikely if Memphis is playing hardball.

He's got a ton of mileage but he's also going to get like half the season off by February so he'll be rested for another deep playoff run. He's not worth trading for but he'd be a huge asset for the Lakers if they can get him through a buyout.

Seems like it will confuse and upset a lot of people based on the top comments whenever this story has come up the last couple months. Mavs offer Lee and Utah's 2nd rounder. Rumors were Mavs called Memphis this summer and Memphis said they wanted to wait for the deadline. I could see this deal going through if no one offers anything better. A free 2nd rounder for someone who isn't even playing.

He has no interest in playing for a rebuilding team or being a mentor, and Memphis has no reason to play a servicable vet making too much money if he doesn't want to. He's on an expiring deal, so Memphis is very okay with letting him sit and stay healthy for a potential trade, but they're not letting him go without getting any value out of him
